Department of Legal and Legislative Services
Purpose
The purpose of the Department of Legal and Legislative Services is to provide efficient and timely legal services to Parliament, its Committees and the Parliamentary Commission.
Functions
- To provide technical support to Members of Parliament and Committees during the process of drafting Private Members’ Bills
- To support the House, Members of Parliament and Committees in drafting proposed amendments
- To interpret existing laws and make analysis of bills as the need may arise for the benefit of Parliamentary Commission
- To provide drafting services for motions, resolutions and questions as may be required
- To give legal advice on matters relating to the administration of Parliament
- To provide up-dated information on the progress of bills for posting to the internet
- To ensure the accuracy of assent copies of a Bill and cause the timely publication of the final text as assented to
